Our practice, like many others, work with Stem Cells to treat a variety of conditions. Apex Center for Regenerative Medicine is New Jersey’s leader in the use of stem cell injections to treat orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions.
We can boast that Dr. Savarino has performed many Stem Cell treatments; few doctors have as much experience in the field.
Stem cell therapy can be used to treat the following conditions:
- Osteoarthritis of the joints
- Chronic partial Rotator Cuff tears
- Persistent partial tendon tears, such as tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, quadriceps, and patellar tendon tears
- Partial muscle tears
- Meniscal (cartilage) tears in the knee
- Chondromalacia patella (patellofemoral syndrome)
At Apex we use cutting-edge technology to harvest your Stem Cells to ensure the highest quality product. We also perform all our injections under direct ultrasound guidance, adding to the accuracy of placement for the best potential benefits. Dr. Savarino is one of the country’s leading physicians in ultrasound-guided injections, and Apex provides the region’s safest, most effective Stem Cell treatments.
When a medical practice advertises Stem Cell Therapy, the potential patient needs to understand that not all Stem Cell treatments are the same, and not all Stem Cells are created equal. The way in which stem cells are acquired, managed, and administered can have a major impact on effectiveness.
Use of Umbilical and Amniotic “Stem Cells” are not good, they contain no Stem Cells and are not safe. Recently CNN and NY times reported 12 cases of serious infections when Umbilical Cord Stem Cells were used to treat pain. The infections were serious enough that these patients had to be hospitalized, some up to 2 months. Umbilical cord blood has very few Mesenchymal Stem Cells. These cells are required to treat pain. They have a lot of Hemopoietic Stem Cells which have no role in pain management.
After birth, the umbilical cord tissue must be harvested, cleaned, processed, sterilized, frozen, stored and transported to the clinic. It is difficult for cells to survive this chain of events. The product brochure of one the Umbilical Cord manufacturers clearly states that there are no Stem Cells in their product.
Our practice uses Stem Cells harvested from bone marrow.
Based on the latest FDA guidance, Bone Marrow Stem Cells are the most compliant of all the commercially available Stem Cells. If a physician removes Stem Cells from the patient’s body and reinjects them on the same day, the procedure is called “Same Surgical Procedure”. Bone Marrow Stem Cells qualify for this exception and Umbilical Cord Stem Cells do not.
Bone Marrow Stem Cells vs Umbilical Cord Stem Cells
Unfortunately, the opportunity to scam patient’s insurance is there, and there are businesses and medical practices that knowingly or unknowingly misrepresent the Stem Cells they supply, in the hopes of obtaining insurance coverage for their product. Manufacturers have found a creative way to make it appear that their umbilical cord and amniotic “Stem Cell” products were covered by Medicare to treat orthopedic and spinal problems.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has realized that manufacturers thought if they changed their Medicare product descriptions for product reimbursement (Q-code) from skin wound care (something that is covered) to add in descriptions of orthopedic indications, it would bypass the LCD (guidelines for coverage). The loophole has closed.
