Viscosupplementation Treatment for Knee Pain

Viscosupplementation Treatment for Knee Pain

, Viscosupplementation Treatment for Knee Pain

Viscosupplementation treatment is a viable option to consider if other treatment options for osteoarthritis knee pain have not effectively relieved pain. Osteoarthritis can be a debilitating condition that occurs when cartilage in the joints begins to break down. Most osteoarthritis sufferers also lose the ability to lubricate the joints with a naturally occurring substance in the body called synovial fluid.

The combination of cartilage loss and non-lubricated joints leads to stiffness, limited range of motion, inflammation and pain. Most people primarily experience the symptoms of osteoarthritis in their knees, but symptoms may also be experienced in the hips, ankles, elbows and wrists. There are a variety of treatment options that could alleviate these symptoms. In our office, we use the latest technology to do so.

Treatment options

We suggest taking a combination approach to treatment that includes these suggestions:

Regular exercise and weight loss

Before taking medication to combat osteoarthritis pain, healthy habits like low-impact exercises and a nutritional diet should be adopted. These habits will lead to more lubrication in the joints and may reduce pressure on the knees. Improved range of motion and muscle-building may also benefit the knees and the person as a whole. Yoga, walking, cycling and swimming are great activity options to consider, as they are easy on the joints and can be performed by people of all fitness levels.

Over-the-counter (OTC) NSAIDs and prescription medications should be considered if pain is still being experienced even with lifestyle changes. These medications can relieve pain and reduce inflammation, leading to a better range of motion and less stiffness in the knees. OTC medications should be tried before taking prescribed medications, as the most conservative treatment is best.

The Viscosupplementation treatment is a modern solution

For some people, the effects of osteoarthritis are so debilitating that more conservative options just do not cut it. Viscosupplementation is usually reserved until patients have tried other treatment options and have not experienced relief from symptoms. During viscosupplementation, a fluid called hyaluronate is injected into the affected joints. This substance has the ability to improve the lubricating ability of the knee and reduce the pain and stiffness associated with the condition.

With only three to five injections, each one a week apart, patients will see noticeable improvements. They may find their mobility has improved, and they are more able to perform activities of daily living. Most patients experience the most relief two to three months following treatment, with symptoms even improving in the weeks before that. Effects of viscosupplementation should last around six months, sometimes longer. Once the treatment has worn off, it can be re-administered as desired.

We offer this treatment option and encourage patients to try it for more long-term relief.
