Tips to Stay Injury- Free
It’s winter in New Jersey, which means a change in fitness routine for many of my patients. Below are some helpful tips for avoiding sports injuries in winter, and any time of year.
Warm up/stretch thoroughly. It’s especially important to adequately warm up during the cold winter months.
Wear appropriate footwear. Note: there is no appropriate footwear for running on ice. If the conditions outside are too bad for a jog, hit the treadmill instead.
Tape or strap vulnerable joints, if necessary.
Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after. It is very easy to remember to drink enough water during the summer months when it’s hot outside, but it’s just as important to stay hydrated in winter.
Cool down after with gentle, sustained stretches.
Allow adequate recovery time between sessions.
Have regular medical check-ups and if you’re experiencing any discomfort with exercise, see a sports medicine physician.
