The Importance of Ultrasound Guided Procedures and Injections

What is a musculoskeletal ultrasound? This is something that many patients ask when first visiting our office. Since we offer patients a variety of innovative and modern procedures, it is quite common for patients to be unaware of how these procedures work. Keeping that in mind, here is what you need to know about this type of ultrasound.

, The Importance of Ultrasound Guided Procedures and Injections

1. Musculoskeletal ultrasound can provide better images than an MRI

An MRI is certainly an effective imaging tool. However, a musculoskeletal ultrasound can often provide us with more detailed images. More detail is always helpful in developing a diagnosis.

2. This type of ultrasound is safe for everyone

Certain patients cannot receive an MRI or an X-ray because of a health condition, like pregnancy. In this case, physicians are unable to get the images they need to make a proper diagnosis. Fortunately, there is another solution. Ultrasound is safe for everyone since there is no radiation and no medication necessary to retrieve the images.

3. Performing musculoskeletal ultrasound is possible while a person is moving

One of the greatest advantages of this type of ultrasound is that a patient can be moving during the process. This is incredibly significant because there are occasions where someone will only feel discomfort when they are moving in a particular way. This creates a problem when trying to use an MRI to diagnose what is happening.

Since the MRI requires the patient to remain completely still, we simply do not get as much information and certain injuries can be missed. With this type of ultrasound, we can see what happens when a patient is still and when they are moving. As a result, we can see things, like certain muscle or tendon tears, that only open with specific motions.

4. The musculoskeletal ultrasound can increase the accuracy of needle procedures

If injections are being used to help reduce pain, for example, it is important to understand the exact location of the area that needs treatment. Ultrasound can be used to see the needle under the skin and guide it to the exact area of injury. Many studies have shown that injections without guidance miss the intended location a large percent of the time.

5. One image can provide an entire picture

Traditional imaging tools like an MRI or X-ray are only going to show a certain portion of the body. With a musculoskeletal ultrasound, we can follow a structure throughout the body which is incredibly helpful when trying to diagnose nerve conditions, for example.

This is significant and prevents the patient from either need to have multiple scans completed or a physician from not getting the entire picture.

Why you should consider musculoskeletal ultrasound

Ultimately, it comes down to results. Someone who is struggling with pain or discomfort but does not know why needs to visit our office for diagnosis. To make a proper diagnosis we will need to determine what is taking place. Traditionally, this is partially complete through the use of imaging tools like an MRI or X-ray. However, they have limitations and make it difficult for us to get a complete picture of what is happening with the body.

Now, thanks to advancements in musculoskeletal ultrasound, we are able to get the entire picture and make a more thorough diagnosis as a result. So, patients who want to feel better by having the source of their problem treated, rather than just medicating their symptoms, should really consider a musculoskeletal ultrasound.
