Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology Can Treat Carpal Tunnel and Foot Pain

, Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology Can Treat Carpal Tunnel and Foot Pain

Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT), also known as shockwave therapy, is an advanced, non-invasive common treatment option for pain that is typically used to treat foot pain but can also help relieve symptoms caused by carpal tunnel. This treatment works quickly and reduces pain in as little as three sessions, typically one per week. If you are experiencing pain, learn how EPAT can help and then schedule an appointment with our office.

How does EPAT work?

EPAT uses a specifically measured set of high-intensity pressure waves that reach deep within the tissues to stimulate blood circulation. This enhanced blood circulation boosts the body’s metabolism and natural healing abilities. The tissues that are affected by the treatment will quickly regenerate, leading to a fast healing process and the reduction of pain. Rather than just temporarily treating symptoms and numbing pain (like pain medication would), EPAT treats the source.

The procedure itself is fast, comfortable and easy. First, a gel is applied to the area that is being treated. Next, a professional will use a handheld device and move it in a circular fashion over the area needing treatment. While doing so, pressure waves will be emitted from the device, working to penetrate the tissue and stimulate blood flow.

The process is comfortable and may last as little as 10 minutes.

What is EPAT used for?

EPAT treatment is used for a variety of orthopedic and musculoskeletal pain conditions. Often, patients will come in for this treatment after suffering a sports injury, being hurt on the job, in a car accident or experiencing pain from a constant or repetitious motion. Below are a few things that can be treated using EPAT:

Carpal tunnel release (reduction in carpal tunnel pain)
Plantar fasciitis
Achilles pain
Heel pain
Tennis elbow
Golf elbow
Shoulder tendonitis
Patellar pain
Ankle pain

Benefits of the treatment for carpal tunnel pain

The benefits of pressure wave therapy are extensive, and the results are long-lasting. If a patient wishes to avoid surgical intervention, this is an excellent option to consider. Additional benefits of EPAT are:

There is little to no downtime
A patient is never cut open
Anesthesia is unnecessary
There is no risk for infection
This is an affordable treatment
It is fast
There are no scars
It works

For someone living with pain, the biggest advantage is the ability to reduce or eliminate that pain without undergoing surgery or taking prescription pain medication. Given the addictive nature of prescription drugs, it is always advisable to seek alternative methods for pain reduction that do not create a risk for dependency.

Only three short treatments of EPAT are usually needed before pain relief begins to occur. After this, the results typically appear quickly. It is common for patients to begin feeling better after the first few treatments. However, in some cases, it could take closer to three or four weeks before a patient really notices a difference. Simultaneously, it is common for patients to see improvements in their range of motion and daily abilities, as blood circulation to the area in question begins to improve, stimulating new tissue growth.
